From Chef’s Knife to Grease Trap Trucks: Steve’s Unlikely Path to Success
Steve Hyman didn’t plan to enter the grease pumping industry — he started out as a chef. But after experimenting with powering his old diesel car on cooking oil, he saw a business opportunity and never looked back.
Laid off every winter, he used the time to travel and eventually launched a grease pumping service focused on restaurants. Fast forward to today, and Steve now runs a 17-truck fleet out of three shops, serving over 5,000 clients across southern Ontario.
Why He Chose Iron-Vac
When COVID disrupted supply chains, Steve needed a truck fast. “My local builder needed a year just to build a tank,” he recalls. “Iron-Vac had one ready to go. That’s how our relationship started.”
Since then, Iron-Vac has supplied every new truck in Steve’s fleet. “You guys have always come through. The trucks are reliable, and I like consistency — all our trucks use the same parts, which saves us time and money.”
Advice for Newcomers
Steve is often asked for advice by newcomers to the industry. “It’s a lot harder to start today than when I did,” he says. “There’s more competition and tighter regulations. But if you’re passionate and disciplined, it can still be a great business.”
Looking Ahead
Despite Canada’s tough winters and the demands of commercial clients, Steve continues to scale — and he credits Iron-Vac for being a dependable partner.
“You’ve made it easy,” he says. “That’s why we keep coming back.”
